Overview

Overview

The world is calling for a different type of leadership, a leadership that values people and planet, a leadership with meaning, empathy and compassion at its heart.  The leadership of our past is no longer fit for our future, one that is calling for adaptability, pace, responsiveness and a responsibility that extends beyond the workplace perimeter; to include our global community and environment. A future that seeks to eliminate exploitation, to reduce inequality and be custodians of our world; one that generates greater accountability and agency in each of us.  The World Economic Forum claims ‘Creativity and empathy will be as important as AI in jobs of the future.’ (Davos, January 2020).

Leadership requires balancing the goals of an organisation with the needs of people working within it.  Too much focus on organisational goals and people can feel undervalued, unheard, and disengaged.  Too much focus on the needs of individuals and an organisation can lack direction and purpose. Leading with Empathy and Compassion is a way to balance the needs of both.  It is an approach that generates meaning in our work and those that we lead.

Greater empathy and compassion in leadership harnesses deeper affirmation in our relationship with others, making them feel valued and creating a strong bond between people; one that strengthens the credibility of the leader.  It is the most powerful way to change minds and win hearts.  As Gary Burnison, CEO of Korn Ferry pointed out “while intellect leads to smart strategy and courage lets you live your values, the heart matters the most.  Our words and actions must signal to others that we really do care enough to notice-to see them for who they really are.”
